Teachers based in Melbourne will be offered up to $700 a day to shift their work to regional Victoria in a bid to address staffing gaps.
Unavailabilities, largely attributed to the pandemic and flu outbreaks, have left country schools with a shortage of teachers.
To address this, the Department of Education has brought in new financial incentives for teachers from Metropolitan Melbourne to work in regional Victoria.

Recruitment agency anzuk has this month begun promoting $700 a day casual teaching roles.
It says the government will subsidise $300 for casual teaching roles, in addition to the general pay rate of about $400.

“Education has been significantly impacted by the effects of the pandemic. Whilst schools across the state have all been affected, schools in Regional Victoria have been hit the hardest,” anzuk recruitment team leader Tenielle Henderson wrote.
“To address this, the Department of Education has brought in a new financial incentive to help teachers from Metro Melbourne to support schools in Regional Victoria. The financial incentive will cover the costs incurred to travel plus some extra spending money.
“The DET have announced that, in addition to regular daily pay rates, it will subsidise $300+ per day, for metro-based Casual Relief Teachers who take up a post teaching in a Regional School.”
The agency says the program will be in place for the rest of term two, with the “likeliness to continue” into term three.
To be eligible, the agency says teachers must be based in Melbourne or be relocating from interstate or overseas.
“As this initiative is to bring more teachers into regional areas, teachers who already reside in Regional Victoria will not be eligible for the additional payment,” Henderson said.
Teachers must work a minimum of two weeks in the identified placements to qualify.

A spokesperson for Victoria’s DET said it was working to support schools to “manage the impact of COVID-19 and flu season”.
One aspect of that, it said, was providing “short-term, casual support throughout 2022”.
“We are also continuing to work with the casual relief teacher (CRT) agencies to ensure teachers are available in Victorian government schools across all areas of the state – including the establishment of a daily rate of travel, accommodation and meals for CRTs who relocate to work in rural Victoria.
“In just the first two weeks of the program, 15 teachers have already been deployed to schools in Shepparton, Wodonga and Wangaratta.
“The Victorian Government is providing $41.7 million to attract more teachers to fill hard-to-staff positions in government schools across the state. 250 incentives have been paid this financial year, of which 70 per cent were allocated to rural and regional schools.”
