Drivers in Melbourne are dealing with significant congestion tonight across the city’s major freeways.
Those travelling into Melbourne from the west are facing lengthy delays, following the closure of inbound lanes across the West Gate Bridge due to an earlier vehicle collision.
VicRoads advises emergency services are attending the scene, and are asking those heading east to use Geelong Road.
Motorists are facing wait times of up to an hour to travel from the Western Ring Road interchange to the West Gate Bridge.
It’s believed outbound traffic across the bridge – the main arterial connecting the western suburbs to Melbourne as well as south and east – was also stopped for a short period following the accident, leading to delays in both directions.
Inbound traffic is understood to also be at a standstill at Burnley, with congestion beginning at the Glenferrie Road overpass in Kooyong, according to live traffic reports.
The alternative West Gate Tunnel project is now in its fourth year of construction, but isn’t scheduled to open until 2025.
